My Mum's Story
When I cooked my mum’s famous ‘Kourabiethes’ for the first time I was inspired to create this exclusive new project. I want to honour my mum for her amazing cooking skills, and encourage others to do the same for their mums. It took me a whole day to make a batch of these delicious Greek shortbread biscuits. I reflected on how mum would make dozens and dozens in one day – there was always a container full for the house, for the boys and me, for her brothers and her friends. She cooked for a crowd. Always with an apron on she was fast and efficient in her kitchen. She used specific tools and utensils for specific recipes and was stubborn in her routine. In spite of how much I wanted to help her, there would be arguments. Everything I did was never good enough and I was getting into trouble for the smallest of things. Dear mum had no patience in teaching. So I would go shopping or visit friends and leave her alone and happy in her kitchen and work flow, ensuring to return in time to help with the dishes, to which there was lesser objection. I remember those times now with a lot of love and admiration for this strong resilient woman with her tough exterior, and a very soft interior that, unfortunately, hardly showed. |
Following mum's Alzheimer's diagnosis, I spent more time in the kitchen with her. She became more tolerant, accepted help, and was happy to 'show me how'. As the disease slowly took away her beloved environment and world of cooking, her kitchen became a strange and alien place, until eventually she could no longer cook at all. Alzheimer's destroyed all those connections. It was heartbreaking to see her deteriorate in this way and I will always cherish the moments we shared, as much as I cherish this recipe and how it reminds me of mum. |
